Math
We follow the sequence of the McGraw-Hill math series. The first semester of school focuses on number sense. Students will practice counting and cardinality, composing and decomposing numbers, recognition of numbers, place value, addition and subtraction. The goal being that they can fluently add and subtract within 5, and have strategies in place to figure out higher math equations. We work on number sense all year.
Other areas of study are graphing, measurement, classification, patterning, as well as two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. Twice a week we work in our Math Problem Solving Journals. where we practice strategies to use the concepts we have been working on in a real-world setting.
Math is run in centers similar to literacy centers, so each child can work at their own developmental level. Much of our math work is hands-on, so students are manipulating the materials for a more concrete understanding of the skills.
Twice a week we use a computer center where we put our math minds to work in a different way. Check the Links section for some of the sites we use.
