Science
Here we are constructing and testing our balloon cars for the engineering fair that we had during Catholic Schools Week. We started our unit with research through books and the internet, and then created a design for our car. The cars were made during several science classes, and next we tested our cars, and redesigned if necessary. It was much harder than we anticipated to make the car move! Below is our hard work.
We are fortunate to have a volunteer to help us with our Science units. Mrs. Laura Wilkowski, who is a former lead science teacher, has been developing and teaching hands-on science units for us. Kindergarten goes to the science lab with her one day a week, and has follow up lessons in our classroom. The units are based on the Next Generation Science Standards as well as incorporating Diocesan Standards.
We begin the year with lessons on what a scientist is and what they do, and use some of these scientific strategies in experiments.
The rest of our units are as follows:
Measurement
*compare length, weight, and mass of objects
Playground Science
*forces of motion
*gravity
*position words
Weather Unit
*what is weather
*sunlight affects temperature
*wind changes direction
*clouds
*water cycle
Animal Unit
*living/nonliving
*communication
*habitats
*omnivore, carnivore, herbivore
*oviparous, viviparous
Earthworm Unit
*how worms move
*what worms eat
*how do worms reproduce
*create a worm bin for observation
Engineering Experiments
*Use the methods of a scientists to find answers to scientific questions
